I love Ellen DeGeneres

Warning: If you don’t like Ellen or watch The Ellen Show you should probably read another blog. However other blogs such as “9 reasons people screw up their lives,” won’t be near as much fun.

I feel compelled to write about Ellen because of all comediennes alive, I think she’s the funniest.

Note I said “alive.” I know this sounds anal, but I keep a list of all my favorite comediennes—even though they may currently be telling their jokes to St. Peter. (I should probably tell a St. Peter joke—but I’ll refrain)

Many of my favorite funny people are memories who I only see in reruns: (some of you young whipper snappers may not even know them): Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Andy Kaufman, Tim Conway, Don Knotts, and Rodney (I get no respect) Dangerfield.

Dangerfield: “I haven’t spoken to my wife in years. I didn’t want to interrupt her.”

It may seem strange that I like Ellen so much, but I first saw her in a TV situation comedy, Open House, in 1989, almost 25 years ago.  She wasn’t the star or one of the main characters, but when she came on the screen, I wanted to see more of her.

It’s clear I’m not part of Ellen’s target audience –young and middle aged women. I’m not young, middle aged, or a woman. I’m not even gay or a guy interested in Cover Girls. (yes, Ellen is a Cover Girl)

Ellen makes me happy. Her shows are fun and entertaining. She recognizes and rewards good people, discovers young talent, and plays silly games.

Her witty skits and Classic joke Tuesday are often juvenile, but they make me laugh.

Ellen Classic Tuesday joke:  ”Why was the book shelf so confident?  It had high shelf esteem.”

At a time when we fear terrorists, nuclear bombs and financial melt downs, it’s nice to take a breather with Ellen’s practical jokes, good nature, and positive energy.

I turn 70 this year and seeing The Ellen Show in person is at the top of my bucket list. My odds are slim because I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an old white guy in the audience, but I can dream.  I would even wear my Ellen underwear.

In the meantime, “Let’s dance.”
