I got interested in social media five years ago.
Since then I’ve been on a mission to convince my business peers the world is passing them by.
Many company executives still think people use social media to tell the world they had a hot dog for lunch.
I’m literally shocked when I realize some of my friends don’t have LinkedIn profiles or LinkedIn company pages.
And I’m bewildered when they tell me they’re too old to learn or don’t have time because they have work to do.
I’ve spent my entire adult life wishing I could be in business at a time when the world was going through a revolution that created opportunitie that never existed before–like the invention of the printing press, the industrial revolution, or the mass production of automobiles.
Guess what? That’s exactly what’s happening now—first came the computer, the Internet, and then social media.
It’s unfortunate it was called “social media.” It certainly can be social, but it’s all about connectivity—the ability for everyone to communicate with one another.
We’re in a new world—a world where we each have a physical life and a virtual life. Some of us may wish to maintain our privacy in our own physical world, but if we want to grow a business or have a successful career, a virtual life is critical.
People initially connected with one another via computer—now we’re using smart phones and tablets. Soon connectivity will migrate to “wearable technology.”
New devices like Google Glass will completely change how we relate to one another.
Soon you will walk down the street wearing your Google Glass. When you see someone you don’t recognize, your glasses will tell you the person’s name, his business, and give you his Internet profile. The unfortunate fellow who doesn’t have wearable technology or who has no Internet presence will be at a huge disadvantage.
We will ask our devices:
- Find a collection agency my friends trust
- Select an advertising agency endorsed by my peers
- What banker would my colleagues recommend?
- Which one of my attorney friends can help me file a patent?
- Who can introduce me to someone at Company X?
This is a rare time in history where we can leapfrog our competition.
But the time now. Act now or prepare for an early retirement.
